Bio - Masayo Ishigure

Ms. Masayo Ishigure began playing the koto and Jiuta shamisen at the age of five in Japan. She earned a degree in Japanese Traditional Music from Takasaki Junior Arts College with a focus on koto and shamisen.

In 1992, she moved to New York City and has since performed at various venues in the metropolitan area, including Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. Additionally, she has showcased her talents at renowned institutions like the Smithsonian Institute, and has collaborated with well-known orchestras such as the San Diego Symphony, New Haven Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, and Hartford Symphony Orchestra.

Masayo Ishigure has graced concerts in countries such as Thailand, Brazil, Holland, France, Germany, Mexico, Russia, Belarus, Jamaica, Hawaii, South Korea, and Alaska.

In 2005, Masayo Ishigure contributed as a recording artist alongside Yitzhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma, and others on the Academy Award-Winning soundtrack from the movie "Memoirs of a Geisha" composed by John Williams.

She was honored with the "2016 Consul General’s Commendation" and, in April 2023, held a recital at Carnegie Hall to commemorate 30 years in the U.S.

From 1992 to 2002, Masayo taught koto and shamisen at Wesleyan University in CT. From 2010 to 2021, she conducted Koto classes at Columbia University. She also provides private lessons in New York City.
